Point of Review: Drake

Drake's debut album, Thank Me Later was a good record that was stifled by familiar traps of 2000s hip hop; too many guest stars, too many attempts to be all things to all fans. It strained the rapper's chances of dropping a debut that exemplified his unique vision. That's not the problem on his sophomore effort Take Care.

This time around, Drizzy Drake is allowed to be himself. That's not really a revelation, for fans that followed the rapper's mixtapes, this sounds more like the Drake of 2009, the Drake many fans expected to hear on his debut. This is the Toronto rapper in all of his mopey, emoting, half rapped/half sung glory. But that doesn't mean the album hits every mark it attempts; but it does mean that Drake has grown artistically and seems more comfortable being himself.

The opener, "Over My Dead Body" finds Drake once again lamenting the tropes of being young and famous. He's not saying anything particularly new here, but his pensiveness is less treacly that it seems later on in the album. Relationships are (as expected) front-and-center on the rapper's mind; "Shot For Me" is a sorrowful tune about a relationship that failed due to Drake's burgeoning career and features production that wouldn't have sounded out of place on a Spandau Ballet song from 1983.

That's not a diss, either.

"Headlines" is the first shot of life on the album, though its only aggressive by comparison to the solemnity that opens the album. "They say they miss the old Drake--girl don't tempt me" Drake raps as he picks apart his imitators and fans' expectations over Boi 1Da's rat-a-tat drumbeat and pulsing synth strings. The title track, which features Rihanna, has a great drum track that evokes a tribal feel (reminiscent of Kanye West's 2008 single "Love Lockdown") and has a great mix of heartfelt emotion and club pulse. The T-Minus-produced "We'll Be Fine" is the most trunk-rattling tune on the album, with Drake's singsongy delivery gliding over slow bass grooves for a feel reminiscent of 2009's "Houstatlantavegas."

The overly 'sleepy' feel of the album can make for great background music or an extremely boring listen--depending on your taste. The Weeknd pops up on "Crew Love," and the song sounds like virtually every other track Drake's sing-songy buddy has released up to this point. And while beatsmith Noah "40" Shebib's synth-heavy productions are almost an inseparable part of Drake's sound at this point and those moody soundscapes fit Drake's lyrics and vocal delivery; it can be a bit monotonous and numbing on an album that's this long.

Andre 3000's guest verse on "The Real Her" was the album's most talked-about moment leading up to its release--and for good reason. We're at a point where seemingly every 3000 guest appearance only adds to the reclusive rapper's legend, and he doesn't disappoint. The only problem with having Three Stacks and Lil Wayne on a Drake track together is that it makes Drake's lyrical shortcomings a little more obvious. The other celebrated guest appearance is Stevie Wonder, who adds some inconsequential harmonica to "Doing It Wrong." And "HYFR" is the one moment on the album where Drake seems to genuinely (gasp!) enjoy himself, with a hook that's sure to be repeated ad nauseum by clubgoers and frat boys for the rest of the year.

Overall, Take Care is a success and a better representation of Drake than his previous album. For the critics who dismiss his focus as too narcissistic and too full of po-faced emoting; well--this album will pretty much validate everything you hate about Drake. But for fans, this stands as an exciting next step for one of this generation's brightest stars. And if it bolsters his confidence as an artist, that can only mean more great things to come.

Kandi Burruss Defends ''Housewives''

Singer/songwriter Kandi Burruss is defending reality TV and her show, "The Real Housewives of Atlanta." The show is popular but controversial and a lot of people feel it perpetuates negative stereotypes of Black women. Kandi said those people need to check themselves.

"Before I even joined the show everybody was talking about how it brought down the image of black people and black women," Burruss says. "But I always tell people when you come on a reality show you're not trying to represent for a whole race, you're just doing you. You hope people think you're interesting and people like it. The one thing people don't give as far as our series, The Real housewives of Atlanta; we are a majority black cast on a network that doesn't have that many shows featuring African Americans. So for us to be the number one show on that network…..why people don't give us any props for that, I don't even understand."

"Yes, it does play into the stereotype of what people say black women are with the neck popping, finger rolling or whatever but I don't feel like it's any different than the New Jersey Housewives where it's mostly Italian Americans on there," Kandi pointed out. "What they do on that show? It's a lot of hot headed Italians on that show but I don't see their communities saying " Oh, they're not representing us Italian Americans correctly or they're not representing white women correctly."

"I feel like we as black people can be very critical of our own race and I don't even think it should be a thing of 'How are they representing us?'," she continued. "Guess what? If you had a camera on you for six months and they taped as much as they wanted to tape and edited it down, I'm sure they're going to have some moments where you're showing out too.:

Will Ferrell Praises ''N***as In Paris''

Comedic actor Will Ferrell share his reaction to being sampled by Jay-Z and Kanye West on their track "N***as In Paris" on the Watch the Throne album. Ferrell sent an email saying he loved the song and wants to be sampled more in hip hop.

"Kanye reached out to me and I said, 'Of course,' " Ferrell wrote in an e-mail. "I was completely flattered when they asked if they could sample me into the song ... and when I heard it for the first time, I just started to laugh because it felt so surreal. But I really did like the song."

"We were trying to film a piece that they would use on the video boards of their concert, but haven't gotten it together," he wrote. "I think [something from] Step Brothers would be good [to use in a song]," he wrote. "Or the Woody Allen movie I did, Melinda and Melinda."

Somebody should sample A Night At the Roxbury.

Terrence J Likes Cougars?

In a recent interview, "106 & Park" host Terrence J revealed that he is a fan of cougars. The personality/host/actor says that older women have a certain appeal and he enjoys the fact that they seem to be more comfortable with themselves.

"I dig mature women," Terrence says. "I dig a woman that knows what she wants, that's comfortable in her skin and confident with her swag. Older women have been able to fulfill that."

He revealed, however, that he's currently dating a 'younger' woman.

"I'm dating a girl that's younger. She's not much younger but she's 28 and I'm 29 so she's younger than me," he shared. "She's an amazing person. I just think timing is everything. It can be the perfect person, but if it's not the perfect time then it's not going to work."

Drake & Rick Ross On Joint Project?

While Drake recently shot down any chance of he and his Young Money general Lil Wayne recording any Watch the Throne-ish album together, Drizzy has revealed that he and an other rap superstar may be collaborating soon on a project.

"I have been working on a mixtape with Ross," Drake said. "A mixtape called 'Y.O.L.O.' [That means] 'You Only Live Once'. I've been working on that for the last couple of weeks. We haven't really connected because he's been going through this thing with his health. I've been stashing my little beats and verses."

Ross hasn't spoken about the release as of yet.

50 Cent On Rick Ross Feud:

50 Cent is now downplaying his infamous feud with rapper Rick Ross. 50 says that the whole thing was just a case of Ross looking to make a name for himself via 50, and that it's no different than any other hip hop battle.

But 50 says he never took the insults they traded back-and-forth too personally.

"He says it started because I looked at him the wrong way," Fif recalled of an incident on the red carpet for the 2009 BET Awards. "That just means he wanted to compete, he wanted to move up, he wanted to create an awareness for himself, and he did it."

"This is why they changed the terminology from 'battling' to 'beefing,'" he added. "It was always that battling was a part of the culture; they didn't do that until Tupac and Biggie Smalls' situation," he said. "That's when it became taboo to actually mention an artist's name."

With Wiz Khalifa adding rapper/model LoLa Monroe, his girlfriend/video vixen Amber Rose gave her two cents about the signing the sexy femcee. Rose made sure to let everyone know what the pecking order is in the House De Khalifa.

She's super talented, she's my sister, she's super duper dope and she is the first lady of Taylor Gang...period. She's going to come in, she's killin' the game and she's working really hard. Drake Squashes Album With Wayne?

As soon as Jay-Z and Kanye dropped Watch the Throne, it seemed like every notable (and many not-so-notable) rapper was announcing a collaborative project either in the works or that they had been 'thinking about' for years and just never got around to actually making.

Well, you can strike one superstar collabo of your list.

Drake says he and Lil Wayne won't be joining the joint album club any time soon.

"Me and Wayne scrapped the idea of a collaboration album," he says. "We just agreed that it would be looked upon as…It would be sort of this competition [with Watch The Throne]. I feel like it would get caught in this whirlwind of hype. [Wayne] agreed. We just said, 'If we do it, we'll do it down the line. But right now is not the time.'"

Consequence Is Still Angry At Q-Tip

Consequence may have made his peace with Kanye West, but that's about the only person the former G.O.O.D. Music rapper isn't beefing with right now. Consequence still has bad blood with Pusha T of G.O.O.D. Music and it doesn't appear he and Q-Tip will be burying any hatchets soon, either.

"I ain't never do nothing with nobody," he said. "Only person I squashed things with was Kanye West."

Despite the fact that Cons had claimed he wanted to stay 'positive' and avoid talking about his ongoing feud with his cousin Q-Tip, he finally made it clear that he still had issues with the A Tribe Called Quest frontman.

"Q-Tip knows what time is it with me," Cons said. "He knows I been thorough from the day he brought me around his situation. I been thorough and ain't nothing change about me. And I'm a positive energy person. That's why Q-Tip has three records on Watch the Throne. And you can tweet that. Tweet that and say I said it."

Drake Hates Social Media?'

Rap superstar Drake isn't a fan of social media. The Young Money rapper says that services like Tumblr and Twitter are affecting this generation in a negative way and encouraging people to live false lives.

"I'm really scared for my generation, you know," Drake told the Source. "The thing that scares me the most is Tumblr. I hate what Tumblr has become. Because it like, it reminds me of those cliquey girls in high school that used to make fun of everyone else and define what was cool, but in five years, when you all graduate, that sh*t doesn't matter. No one gives a f**k about that sh*t. Instead of kids going out and making their own moments, they're just taking these images and living vicariously through other people's moments. It just kills me. Then you'll meet them and they're just the biggest turkey in the world. They don't actually embody any of those things. They just emulate. It's scary man, simulation life that we're living. It scares me."

"I'll tell you, my biggest thing was, I remember, it was on Twitter. I remember the day my mom was getting surgery and someone came on Twitter and they were like, 'Yo, Drake, I hope your mom dies.' You don't really mean that," he added. "Like, you know you're going to see something bad. Out of 1000 compliments, it's so crazy. It's basically, like, when you used to sit there as a kid, and want to know what everyone is thinking. That's your superpower. [Twitter is] knowing what everyone is thinking."

Rihanna's Cover Is 'Unpretty?'

Pop superstar Rihanna says she chose her cover for her upcoming album Talk That Talk because she thought it was edgier than the imagery she's typically known for on her album covers.

The singer even went so far as to call the cover 'unpretty.'

"This, to me, is the most unpretty cover I've ever done and that's why I like it. It's not about what I look like- how smooth and prefect it is, it's about what my eyes say," Rihanna says. "My eyes say everything…tongue out. I don't even give a f*ck that this is not cute because I have something to say. I gotta 'Talk That Talk.'"

Rih-Rih's 2009 album Rated R featured a dark, goth cover--hard to see how this is less 'pretty' than that one.

Big Pooh Doesn't Have Groupies?

Apparently, indie rap isn't where the groupies are. At least, not according to rapper Big Pooh. The former Little Brother rhymer says rhyming for the backpacker set doesn't let to automatic groupie love backstage.

"I ain't one of them artists where chicks see me and wanna throw the panties at me type rappers, man [laughs]," Pooh says. "Women tend to think I have alot of groupies, and of course, there are women who are drawn to this lifestyle, but you can be a mechanic and have groupies. But at this level that I'm at, you still have to put in work in order to get a groupie or get a female. It's not an automatic, 'When I see you, we f*ckin'' situation. That's rare."

"What alotta people don't realize is that our shows used to bring alot of couples out," he continued. "There were women that liked the group, but it ain't like a Rick Ross concert where women are just throwing the p*ssy out. You still had to exhibit a little talk game."

Amber Rose Serious About Music & Film?

Amber Rose is dead serious about her movie and music 'careers.' The model/vixen/reality star made it clear that she's pursuing music with her entire mind and spirit--and its not just a vanity project. While her upcoming album has no title or release date, Rose does say that this is her new passion.

"Oh yeah man, I'm in the studio every single night," Rose told SOHH. "Like, I do not sleep. [laughs] I'm really, really, grinding. I'm really in the studio. The music that I make is fun, it's dance music, it's club, just super fun music that gets you in a great mood and makes you happy. So I'm all about music and this is my time to really, really come out and hopefully make people happy when they listen to it."

And her film career? She's working hard on that, too.

"It's been a really amazing year. I have two movies coming out, one is Just Add Water, which is a sci-fi thriller, where I play a supervisor to all the androids on a spaceship," she shared to BET. "Then in Gang of Roses 2, I play a bounty hunter who is also a butch lesbian, which was super cool, because even though I dress androgynous sometimes, I'm really feminine. So I had to hang out with Wiz and the guys, and study their mannerisms. I even had a speech coach to help make my voice deep."

Ashanti hasn't really been a hot property in music for a while now, but there's no telling what joining could mean for her career. Or theirs.

Chris Brown/Drake Joke Goes Too Far?

DJ Whoo Kid's radio 'joke' got a lot of attention over the weekend. The DJ appeared on Tim Westwood's show in the UK and commented that Young Money superstar Drake had been knocked out by R&B singer Chris Brown over Brown's ex-girlfriend Rihanna.

"Thank God there's Drake out there. He had atleast 8 records on the radio that's killing it, not to mention features, his own singles and um, him and Rihanna supposedly fooled around," Whoo Kid told Westwood. When Westwood pressed him for more info, Whoo Kid said, "I think he got elbowed by Chris Brown, too, but that never came out."

"In the chin, in the corner left part," Whoo Kid continued. "'Man Down.' Simple as that. I mean, c'mon, Tim. I'm trying to be simple here."

After the Web exploded with the news, DJ Whoo Kid tweeted that he was goofing. "Me and @timwestwood were joking on radio — #youCantbeSERIOUS HAHA @chrisbrown did not knock out DRAKE!!!"
